Ben Hoffman runs Raptor Rescue, a dedicated rehabilitation facility for injured birds of prey in Pietermaritzburg, KZN. Originally from Zimbabwe, Ben worked for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and was posted in Hwange National park. After a stint as a professional white water and river guide on the Zambezi river, Ben became involved in game capture, harvesting crocodile eggs on Lake Kariba and the Zambezi River, international wildlife relocation, wildlife animal handler in the movies, and university……all underpinned by a passion for birds of prey. Currently Ben undertakes raptor projects, mentors post-grad students in raptor related research, is involved in the Bearded Vulture, Zululand Vulture and White headed vulture recovery programmes, and recently started to build micro solar powered tracking devices for birds. Ben has been an active falconer since he was 12 and recently received an Owl Award from Birdlife SA in recognition of his contributions to raptor conservation.
Join us on Friday night the 3rd of November, where an alfresco dinner, by Nicole von Waltsleben (well known locally for her pop-up restaurants) will be served on the AgriSPACE porch while Ben shares his experiences and vast knowledge on “Raptors in Research” starting at 18:00.
