BRECHAN

  SHANNON & STEVE GILSON

This would be the first garden reached by visitors coming from the Pietermaritzburg/Underberg direction. The house is the original homestead of Archie Scott (a blacksmith who came to Kokstad with the Griquas).  It stood empty for many years and the garden degenerated to veld which was ploughed up when Steve and Shannon were married 22 years ago. Elize Jackson helped Shannon with some of the original layout, but she has developed most of it herself over the last ten years. She has a variety of interesting water features and other focal points, which she has creatively structured largely from old farm scrap, and her garden evolves each year with new ideas.

Brechan is predominantly a semi intensive sheep farm. As a result, Shannon and Steve have concentrated on training some of their staff and developing a flourishing cottage industry. The Brechan team of spinners will be displaying their talents, spinning the wool from the Brechan Corriedale and Dohne Merino flocks. Their products will also be for sale.

Shannon’s well known photography will be for sale in her unique gallery and beautifully detailed botanical art by her mother, Penny Nicholson-James, will also be available.

Shannon will also have a variety of plants, that she has taken from her own garden, for sale.

Breakfasts, lunches and teas will be available throughout the weekend, with the highlight being a hearty oxtail lunch on Sunday, served from 11am.

Geoff Smith, one of our well-known local musicians, will entertain you from 11 :00 on Sunday. Come and enjoy some old numbers – “Elvis”, a little bit of country and also some new.
